Schwermetall Heavy Metal

What is this metal thing that grows from the ground?

It is some sort of tube.

What happened at this place to make a tube of metal grow here?

A long time ago the area near these tubes was an industrial waste water disposal area.

During the second half of the 20th century, toxic organic compounds and heavy metals were washed here using a mighty and complex pumping system.

These tubes are remnants of the measurement and control structure of that system.

These tubes are part of a paradoxical and contradictory situation.

The pollution surrounding the tubes prevents much use of the area by business. It is poisonous to life, particularly human life. Therefore the pollution that the tubes brought become a reason to declare the surrounding region an area of nature protection.

Perhaps this is an irony. Perhaps it is a reminder.

Extremely large scale human endeavours seem to often result in extremely large scale surprises.

It is as if something gets out of hand and it all falls away.

As if something falls far far away into the unimaginable future, to rest there waiting for the wind to blow a gentle breeze into a relentless consequence.

To resound occasionally with a tiny memory from a distant time before everything was poisonous.
